Comrades Marathon Partners with Monopoly

As part of its centenary year celebrations, the Comrades Marathon has partnered with Monopoly on the launch of a new board game.

The Comrades Marathon Centenary Monopoly board game was the brainchild of Leon Swanepoel, CEO of Sportsvendo and a two-time Comrades gold medal winner.

“As a Comrades Marathon runner, it struck me one day that the world-famous Comrades Marathon could be the perfect theme for a Monopoly board,” said Swanepoel, who added that he noticed a few years ago that Monopoly had started producing their popular board game with other existing brands and points of interest.

“I was fascinated and immediately became a collector of Monopoly board games,” he said. “There are over 1,000 different themed Monopoly board games, and this includes movies, artists, history, retailers and strong brands in general. Both the Comrades Marathon and the Monopoly board game include landmarks, and after I had done some research, I discovered that no city marathon or road running race had ever been used for a Monopoly theme.”

A meeting with the Monopoly team in London followed and Sportsvendo obtained the rights.

Sportsvendo is the events company behind the well-known Color Run Series and Warner Bros. Justice League Virtual Run Series.
