SABC Officially Launches Sports Channel

The SABC has officially launched its 24-hour sports channel, promising to deliver compelling sports content via free-to-air broadcasts and online streaming.

The channel — which had its soft launch on 15 April — is now available on SABC digital TV broadcasting, Openview channel 124, and the TelkomONE streaming service.

“Since the channel became operational in April this year, its audience figures have been positive, with the latest TAMS figure showing a total reach of over two million — a 5% share of the national television market,” said SABC Sport General Manager Gary Rathbone. “On Openview alone, the channel has established itself amongst the top 10 on the bouquet, with a total reach of over 1.4 million, representing a 24% share of the Openview market.”

The 24-hour feed will exist as a single channel on digital terrestrial television (DTT), which will be available on a set-top box available at the post office, and on Openview decoders and its TelkomONE streaming platform.

The traditional SABC 1, 2 and 3 channels will choose their sports programming from that, said Rathbone.

Upcoming events to feature on the channel will include Bafana Bafana friendlies, the Tokyo Olympics, the Confederation Cup, the Carling Black Label Cup, Formula E motorsport, French Top 14 rugby, boxing, and local cricket, athletics and tennis.
