SABC Signs Rights Deal with Extreme E

Extreme E, the new electric off-road racing series, has agreed a rights deal with the SABC.

The deal will grant SABC rights to all races from the inaugural season of Extreme E, which debuted this month with the Saudi Arabia X Prix. Races will be shown on SABC’s linear channels and on various digital platforms: SABC Sport Portal, Telkom One OTT Platform and Openview.

SABC will also air Extreme E’s behind-the-scenes magazine show and documentaries such as Climate ChangersHow to Build a Race Car, and Best of Extreme E.

Extreme E’s deal with SABC adds to its coverage in sub-Saharan Africa, where it has already reached an agreement with pay-television broadcaster StarTimes, which will cover the series over a three-year cycle from 2021 to 2023. Global sports broadcaster ESPN is also covering the series across the African continent.

Extreme E recently signed a deal with OTT subscription streaming broadcaster DAZN for non-exclusive rights to the series in over 100 countries, including South Africa, France, the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Portugal and Egypt.

Extreme E will race in some of the world’s most remote environments to demonstrate the performance and benefits of electric vehicles and clean technology, while highlighting the impact of climate change on these ecosystems.
