Motsepe Foundation to sponsor the NFD

Motsepe responds to last-minute plea for sponsorship assistance for South Africa’s second tier football competition.

Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe has announced that the Motsepe Foundation will sponsor the National First Division from next season.

The NFD, which was known as the GladAfrica Championship, is the second tier of South African professional football and will be renamed the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Last season, the GladAfrica Championship saw the promotion of Richards Bay to the Premier Soccer League, with University of Pretoria failing to earn elevation to the paid ranks during the promotion play-offs.

During the announcement in Sandton, Motsepe expressed delight at the partnership that will see a number of companies associated with the Motsepe family raise sponsorship for the league.

“South African football has a long and proud history and has produced some of the talented players in Africa and in the world. It is an honour for the Motsepe Foundation to make a humble contribution to the development and growth of South African football,” said Motsepe.

“We are grateful to the Motsepe Foundation for contributing to the sustainability and promotion of South African football,” said Dr Irvin Khoza, Chairman of the PSL. “I am excited that my urgent request to the Motsepe Foundation for support was accepted and activated at such short notice.”

Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe Co-Founder of the Motsepe Foundation said: “We have over the years supported football and it provides thousands of jobs, contributes to the improvement in living conditions and standards of living of the poor and marginalised, and is loved by millions of our people.”
