The International Hockey Federation has announced that South Africa will stage the next edition of its Indoor World Cup in 2023, following the cancellation of this year’s planned event in Liège, Belgium.

The FIH Executive Board has decided that a 2023 Indoor World Cup will be staged in the city of Pretoria from February 5-11.

The FIH was in January forced to cancel the following month’s planned Indoor World Cup in Belgium amid ongoing concerns relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event had been due to take place in Liège from February 2-6, but the FIH said the “huge uncertainty” regarding the evolution of the Omicron variant did not give enough guarantees that the tournament could be held in a safe and feasible way.

The competition, which traditionally takes place every four years featuring men’s and women’s national teams, had originally been due to take place in 2021, but was postponed because of the pandemic. It was last held in Berlin, Germany, in 2018.
