South Africa’s 2024 Triple Crown culminates with the South African Derby, with headline sponsor Toyota looking to make the most of the third leg of the local showjumping series.
The South African Derby was first established in 1965 and was held on the Inanda Club cricket field in Sandton. The 1200-metre, 18 obstacle course remains relatively unchanged since its inception and coupled with its history, the Derby is regarded as “the ultimate test of courage, strength and endurance”.
The show will be hosted at Kyalami Equestrian Park from 3 – 6 October, with the ultimate showjumping test and highlight on the local equestrian calendar set for 14h00 on Sunday 6 October in the Bob Charter Arena.

This year, thanks to headline partner Toyota, there is even greater incentive to take home the treasured trophy with the addition of the Triple Crown title, which is made up of the SA Adult Outdoor Grand Prix, the SA Adult Championships, and the SA Derby. The rider with the highest points across the three rounds will win a brand-new Toyota Crown.
“True to form, Toyota have elevated this event to a whole new level and we are extremely grateful. All plans are in place to celebrate equestrian excellence, where speed, style, and showmanship meet the finish line,” says Heather Mpofu, Kyalami Park Club Show Director. “When visiting the show, fans will witness the best horse and rider combinations across various disciplines, including the Show Horse Derby, Working Riding Derby, Working Hunter Derby, Dressage Derby, and the Compleat Horse Derby.”
There’ll also be food stalls and markets, vehicle displays, kids activities, and plenty more taking place throughout the four-day festival.
“We are truly honoured to sponsor this event and witness such outstanding performances. The journey to becoming a professional horse rider requires immense physical strength, precise co-ordination, and a deep understanding of equine behaviour. These riders demonstrate exceptional balance, agility, and the ability to make split-second decisions, all while maintaining a harmonious connection with their horses. Their commitment to training, discipline, and the profound emotional bond they share with their horses is truly inspiring,” says Glenn Crompton, Vice-President of Marketing at TSAM.
