Medical aid scheme Profmed has launched a five-episode documentary series, titled ‘Mind & Field’, which aims to explore the support systems that professional athletes have behind them.

Each episode features a pro athlete and the professional who has provided them with the scientific and expert support enabling them to get there.

Craig Comrie, Profmed Principal Officer, says that from a mental health perspective, more athletes than ever are speaking out against the stresses and anxiety associated with their profession.

“Conversely, the success stories are seldom what they seem,” he says. “For everyone in the spotlight, there’s a significant driving force in the shadows that is crucial for success.”

The series covers the stories of Paralympic medalists Louzanne Coetzee and Puseletso Mabote, IBF Africa Champion boxer Hedda Wolmarans, Proteas cricketer Junior Dala, and Blue Bulls’ Ruan Nortjé, and looks at the mental aspects of their success, coupled with the teamwork and support that guides them towards their goals.

“No-one becomes a champion, in any field, without resilience, mental fortitude and strong partnerships. There is an army of people behind every success story – professional help that got them there,’ says Comrie. “These are incredibly inspiring stories. Some of the obstacles that this series’ guests have overcome is testament to the fact that pro athletes focus as much on their mental health as they do on their physical health.”

Episode one aired on SuperSport Variety 3 on 17 August.
