XTERRA Cradle Moon has announced that it has added a trail run to the event, which is due to take place in the Cradle of Humankind on the 13th of October.
So, whether you’re an elite athlete or a family looking for a fun day out, Cradle Moon offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, challenging terrain, and a welcoming community spirit.
Running parallel to the full triathlon, the trail run opens up the event to the whole family, making it accessible not just for elite athletes, but for everyone who enjoys outdoor adventures. There are two trail events to choose from – a 5km and a 10km – both designed to provide a fun and social atmosphere while still allowing participants to challenge themselves.
Entry fees for the trail events are R250 for the 5km and R350 for the 10km, respectively. Included in the fees, each participant will receive a finisher medal, nutrition and hydration on the route, XTERRA Sox at registration, and access to clean amenities and safe, secure parking.

“The 5km course is perfect for those seeking a non-hilly, family-friendly run, and is designed for an enjoyable outing in nature,” said Conrad Stoltz, multiple XTERRA World Champion and the man behind the event. “Participants can expect fast-flowing tracks with stunning views of the Cradle of Humankind and the opportunity to spot wildlife such as giraffes and zebras. The 10km course is a bit more challenging, yet still accessible, and features fast-flowing tracks early on, showcasing the best views of the Cradle of Humankind. The route is designed to get your blood pumping and immerse you in the natural beauty of the area.”
The XTERRA World Tour spans 47 countries and features 51 races, giving off-road athletes the chance to compete on diverse terrains and earn a spot at the XTERRA World Championship. The series brings together elite and amateur racers from around the world, offering a unique opportunity to challenge oneself against the toughest terrains across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region.
XTERRA South Africa was introduced in 2004 and has since seen events in Grabouw, Buffelspoort in Gauteng, Port Elizabeth, and Knysna, with Grabouw serving as the primary venue. After a brief hiatus, XTERRA South Africa has been revived by Stoltz. The event is set to feature a rotating schedule of venues across the country, enhancing accessibility and bringing the excitement of XTERRA to a wider audience.
“After your run, join us in the XTERRA Cradle Moon Race Village for a fun social gathering,” said Stoltz. “Grab your morning coffee fix and compare your Strava segments over a cold beer or gin in the beer garden. Enjoy brunch or lunch at one of the two restaurants at Cradle Moon or from the various vendors on site. If you’re not spotting wild animals, relax at the beach area while soaking up the sun at this stunning UNESCO World Heritage site. With live entertainment on offer, the event promises a day of adrenaline-fueled fun for the entire family.”
