Man United to cut more jobs

Share

Manchester United have confirmed that up to 200 jobs will be made redundant as part of a financial restructuring aimed at returning the club to profitability.

The decision follows an earlier wave of redundancies last year, which saw approximately 250 staff members leave the organisation.

United’s Chief Executive Omar Berrada informed employees of the latest cuts during a meeting, outlining the club’s ‘transformation plan.’

The process, which is expected to take between three and four months, will be subject to consultation with employees. Manchester United had 1,140 employees as of 30th June 2024, meaning a total of 450 redundancies over two years would equate to a 39% reduction in the workforce.

The club has reported financial losses for five consecutive years since 2019, including a £27.7m loss in its most recent quarterly results. Over the past three years, accumulated losses have exceeded £300m.

Manchester United has stated that the measures are intended to “improve financial sustainability and enhance operational efficiency,” creating a more stable platform for future investment in football operations and infrastructure.

The club has also appointed Marc Armstrong as Chief Business Officer, and he will likely play a key role in the transformation plan.

As part of this, some staff will relocate from Old Trafford to the team’s Carrington training ground, and leadership will be Manchester-based as the London presence will be reduced.

Cost-cutting measures also include removing free staff lunches at Old Trafford, saving £1m annually, while catering at Carrington remains unchanged. The club’s £40,000 donation to the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association will continue, with Manchester United Foundation contributions under review.
