Cape Town gears up for start of summer season with SNVS event

Organisers of the HSBC SVNS have confirmed that Cape Town will once again host the new season’s second tournament in December.

The Mother City will host the tournament on the weekend of 7 and 8 December, following the season-opener in Dubai the week before.

It’ll see South Africa’s Blitzboks and 23 other best men’s and women’s sevens teams on the planet converge on Cape Town for the (un)official start of the summer season and the ever-popular HSBC SVNS at the DHL Stadium.

South Africa will be looking to win their home tournament for the first time since 2015.

The event has returned to its former format of a unique festival of sport, entertainment and culture across two action-packed days on one field, combining rugby, music, food, and wellbeing to an ever-growing variety of audiences.

Rian Oberholzer, SA Rugby CEO, said the 2024 event promised to once again deliver the elements that have made the Cape Town leg of the world series one of the best sporting events in South Africa.

“The setting, the wonderful stadium, the hospitality and love for rugby from the fans bring a unique Cape Town experience to the tournament,” said Oberholzer, “and with 24 of the world’s best teams in action, supporters can expect the best of two worlds – brilliant athletes on display in a brilliant environment and atmosphere.”

The competition will feature the Olympic gold medal-winning French men and New Zealand women’s teams, among the 12 teams in each competition, as well as Olympic sensations such as the USA women’s and Fijian men’s teams.

The 2023 experiment of using two fields over three days has seen a reversion to a two-day action-packed ‘sprint’.

“The Cape Town Sevens has established itself on the calendar as the unofficial start of summer in the Mother City and we’re looking forward to another weekend of spectacular rugby and fantastic fun for 100 000 people,” said Oberholzer.

Details on ticket sales will be announced in due course.
