Lions Cricket has completed its rebrand, with the unveiling of the franchise’s stadium as the DP World Wanderers Stadium.
This follows the August announcement that following the acquisition of Imperial Logistics by DP World Logistics in March the Lions would be rebranded to the DP World Gauteng Lions men’s and women’s cricket teams.
The stadium announcement coincided with the launch of the new South African domestic season for the Lions, as well as the unveiling of both teams’ new playing kit across the different formats.
“The summiting of Mafadi, the highest point in South Africa, was the start of the Lions journey in our goal of being number one off field as well as on,” said Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright. “We had a superb season producing top-class players both men and women, with plenty of advancement to national duty. Producing multiple players stretched our pipeline last season and yet we were still able to compete – right up to the last day of the four-day competition and winning the One Day Cup – which really speaks to our school system, university system, club system, the coaches, administrators and in fact the entire eco-system and how much depth there is.”

DP World aims to utilise this partnership as a platform from which to drive awareness of various socio-economic issues such as gender-based violence, support South African sporting heroes, and continue to make a positive impact on the country and the continent as a whole.
“We place a strong emphasis on empowering and supporting the local people and communities in which we operate, while delivering sustainable and inclusive growth,” said Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman & Chief Executive Officer at DP World. “Taking over the naming rights of the most iconic stadium in Africa is part of our commitment to developing and driving business, sports and culture on the continent. The DP World Wanderers Stadium is a solid extension of our global partnership network and one that we believe will be a catalyst for our positioning on the African continent”.
The DP World Wanderers Stadium is a premier multi-purpose entertainment space and one of world cricket’s most iconic venues.
Along with the domestic fixtures, the upcoming season will see the stadium host the West Indies and then the Netherlands for the Pink Day one-day international. The DP World Wanderers Stadium will also be the home of the Joburg Super Kings for the SA20, whilst it will also host a plethora of non-cricketing events, with some already confirmed and plenty in the pipeline.
