Due to the taxi strike in the Western Cape, organisers of the race took the decision to cancel the Cape Town leg of the Totalsports Women’s Race on 9 August.

“The organisers have been thoroughly monitoring the ongoing taxi strike in the Western Cape since it started,” said a statement. “All possible scenarios have been considered. After intense consultation with all the stakeholders, we regret to inform you that a decision has been made to cancel the Totalsports Woman’s Race in Cape Town.”

The statement said the cancellation was down to two reasons: concern for the safety of all runners, workers and suppliers to the event, and the danger and/or lack of public transport available to all entrants who needed to get to race pack collection and the event itself.

The organisers behind the race said they would assess the opportunity to stage a replacement event, once the strike was eventually over.

“We will inform entrants in this regard as soon as possible,” said the statement. “This was an extremely difficult decision for everyone involved, but as organisers, sponsors and all other stakeholders, we are obliged to make the safety and security of our runners our highest priority. In addition, we need to ensure that all runners have an equal and safe opportunity to take part in the event. For all those involved we sincerely apologise that the Women’s Day celebration has to be cancelled and thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.”
